A supercontinent is a very large landmass made of most or all of Earth's continents joined together. The word is used in geology and Earth history, for example when talking about ancient landmasses like Pangaea. It describes a major stage in the long movement of continents.

supercontinent は super-「上に・越えて」と continent から成る語です。continent はラテン語 continere「ひと続きに保つ」が源なので、「普通の大陸を越える規模で一つにつながった陸地」という意味だと納得できます。関連語に superhuman, contain があります。
Supercontinent combines super- "above, beyond" with continent. Continent comes from Latin continere, meaning "to hold together," which also gave English contain.
