覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
muggles は muggle「魔法を使えない普通の人」の複数形で、原形に規則的な -s を加えた形です。語末 /l/ は有声音なので -s は /z/ と発音し、音節は増えません。物語内で wizards「魔法使いたち」と対になる語として覚え、muggles cannot see magic や hide a wand from muggles のような場面と結び付けましょう。
Remember muggles as the group opposite witches and wizards in the Harry Potter world: they are ordinary humans without magical powers. The form is the regular plural of muggle, made by adding -s. Because muggle ends in the voiced sound /l/, the plural ending is pronounced /z/, with no extra syllable. Typical story contexts make the meaning easy to recognize: wizards hide wands from muggles, magical places may be concealed from them, and muggles may live beside magical people without knowing it. Outside the stories, the word can be used playfully for uninformed outsiders.

muggles の語源・成り立ち Etymology
J.K.ローリングがハリー・ポッターシリーズで創作した語。英俗語のmug(騙されやすい人、間抜け)が語源とされ、魔法を持たない一般人を指す。mugは18世紀英語で「顔」を意味し、転じて「お人好し」の意味になった。muggle自体は古い英語方言に「尻尾のように垂れ下がる」の意味もあった。
Muggle in its famous modern sense was coined by J. K. Rowling for the Harry Potter series, and muggles is its regular plural. Rowling associated the formation with mug, a British informal word that can suggest a gullible or foolish person, while giving the new term a softer, more ordinary sound. Earlier unrelated uses of muggle existed in English varieties, but they do not supply the fictional definition. The series established the word internationally as the label for people without magical ability.
