magic はギリシャ語 magikos、ラテン語 magicus、古フランス語 magique を経て英語に入った語で、もとは古代ペルシアの祭司階級 Magi に結びつきます。つまり「不思議な力」は宗教的な秘術のイメージから来ており、magician や magi にも同じ語源が見えます。
Magic came into English through Old French magique, from Latin magicus and Greek magikos. It is linked to the Magi, an ancient priestly group in Persia who were known for religious knowledge and mysterious practices.
