覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
state（状態）の複数形sがついたものと形が似ていますが、state自体が「国・状態」を意味する語幹として使われます。「国（state）の状態を把握するためにデータを集めたもの」＝統計（statistics）と連想すると覚えやすいです。なお、stateを使う他の単語（statusなど）と違い、複数形のsがついて複数のデータを扱うイメージです。 また、頻出コロケーションとしてstatistics show that...（統計は〜を示している）の形でよく使われます。形容詞はstatistical（統計の）、動詞はcompile statistics（統計を作成する）などが一般的です。数学の分野ではmean（平均）やmedian（中央値）と一緒に登場することが多く、実際の数値データを指す場合は複数扱い、学問としては単数扱いになります。
