まず statistics（統計学）を知っていれば、その人版が statistician と覚えると入りやすいです。語尾の -ian は musician, historian などと同じで「その分野の人・専門家」。つまり「statistics を扱う人」。単なる math の人ではなく、collect data, analyze data, interpret results の流れで、調査や実験の数字を読んで結論を出す役です。statistic は個々の統計値、statistician はそれを扱う専門家、という切り分けも一緒に覚えると混同しにくくなります。
