mustang の語源・成り立ち Etymology
mustang はメキシコ系スペイン語 mestengo に由来し、さらにスペイン語 mesteño「飼い主のいない家畜」へさかのぼります。元は「群れから外れたもの」の感覚で、北米の野生馬を指す語に発展しました。関連形は Mesta、mesteño です。
Mustang entered English from Mexican Spanish mestengo, a variant related to Spanish mesteño, meaning an ownerless or stray animal. The Spanish term was associated with livestock belonging to or regulated by the Mesta, a powerful organization of livestock owners. In North America, the word became specifically associated with free-roaming horses descended from domestic stock. Its history therefore reflects the animal’s status outside an individual owner’s herd, not a separate wild horse species.
