解説 Definition
オウムガイは深い海に住む軟体動物で、外側にらせん状の硬い殻を持ち、外套膜を使って水を吐き出すことでゆっくりと泳ぐ。海の中で長い進化の歴史をとどめる生きた化石の一つとされ、内部の気室で浮力を調節して移動する。貝のように見える殻の断面は螺旋を描き、外敵から身を守る役割も果たしている。
