Ammonites is named after Ammon, an ancient Egyptian god. The coiled fossil shells were compared to a ram's horns, which were linked with Ammon, so they were called Latin cornu Ammonis, meaning "horn of Ammon." From that name, the word came to be used for these fossils; ammonia is also related through the same god's name.
