壁の表面に何かが置かれている状態や位置を表す表現。ポスターや絵、時計などを壁に飾るときにも使う。部屋のレイアウト説明や指示文、観察文で頻繁に現れる。
On the wall means attached to, hanging on, or placed against the surface of a wall. It is often used for pictures, signs, clocks, and other things you can see on a wall.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
覚える軸は on＝「表面に接している」。机なら on the table、壁でも同じで、絵・ポスター・時計のように壁の表面に付いて見えているものは on the wall になる。in the wall だと「壁の内部に埋め込まれて」、over the wall だと「壁を越えて」で別意味。a picture on the wall, a clock on the wall の形で場面ごと覚えると定着しやすい。
Use `on` for something touching a surface. A picture, clock, or poster is `on the wall` because it is attached to the wall's surface. Compare it with `in the wall`, which means inside the wall.

onは古英語on/an（接触・上に）、wallはラテン語vallum（防壁・柵）が古英語weallを経て定着した。ローマ人が築いた防壁（ハドリアヌスの長城など）が語源に影響。関連語：interval（間隔＝壁と壁の間）、wallpaper。「壁に接している」状態を表す前置詞句。
