Ordovician は、ウェールズの古代ケルト系部族 Ordovices にちなむ地質時代名で、語尾 -ian は「…に属する」です。Cambrian や Silurian と同じ命名法で、『その部族の地層が典型』という発想から、オルドビス紀の名になりました。
