Orienteering is an outdoor activity or sport in which people use a map and compass to find their way through an area. It is commonly done in forests or parks and focuses on navigation as well as speed.

orienteering は orient「方角を定める」に -ing が付いた語で、orient はラテン語 oriens「昇る東」に由来します。太陽が昇る向きが基準だから「東」から「方向判断」へ広がり、origin や orientation にも同じ「立ち上がる・向き」の感覚が残ります。
Orienteering was formed from orient + the English suffix -ing. Orient comes from Latin oriens, meaning "rising" or "the east," because the sun rises in the east and gave people a natural point for direction.
