Navigation is the process of finding the way to a place or directing movement from one place to another. It is used for travel by car, ship, plane, or online systems such as apps and websites. The word can refer both to the skill of guiding and to the system that helps you do it.

navigate（進む道を導く）を名詞化した形だと捉えると覚えやすい。まず動詞 navigate を押さえ、「人や乗り物を迷わず進ませる」「情報の中をたどる」動きが navigation になる。car navigation, GPS navigation のように“目的地まで案内する仕組み”でよく使い、direction が単なる道順、route が経路そのものなのに対し、navigation は案内・誘導のシステム寄り。website navigation のように画面上の移動にも広がる。

navigation はフランス語を経てラテン語 navigatio に由来し、語根は navis「船」＋ agere「動かす・導く」です。もともと「船を進めること」だったので、そこから航海術や案内の意味へ広がったとわかります。関連語に navy, naval があります。
"Navigation" came through French from Latin navigatio. It is based on navis, "ship," and agere, "to drive" or "to guide," so it originally meant moving or directing a ship. From that, it grew into the wider sense of sailing, route-finding, and guiding movement; "navy" and "naval" share the same ship root.
