ours
私たちのもの
解説 Definition
すでに話題に出た物などが、話し手を含む複数の人に属することを名詞なしで表す代名詞。
A possessive pronoun used to show that something belongs to or is associated with the speaker and one or more other people. It replaces a noun phrase rather than appearing before a noun.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
our の後ろには名詞を置くが、ours は名詞の代わりまで務めると覚えると定着しやすい。This is our car. と This car is ours. を対にして練習すると違いが明確になる。ours の末尾の -s は複数を表すものではなく、所有代名詞の形の一部なので、アポストロフィーは付けない。
Connect ours directly with our: both express possession by a group that includes the speaker, but only our needs a following noun. Compare “This is our table” with “This table is ours.” Practise this pair whenever you learn a new object. The final -s is part of the possessive-pronoun form, as in yours and theirs; it does not mark a plural and never takes an apostrophe. Also notice the comparison pattern “Their room is larger than ours,” where ours replaces “our room.”
例文

ours の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ours は所有を示す our に、所有代名詞を作る語尾 -s が付いた形です。中英語期に現れ、名詞を伴わず「私たちのもの」を示す形として定着しました。our は古英語 ūre に由来し、同じ関係は your と yours、their と theirs にも見られます。
Ours was formed from our with the possessive ending -s and became established in Middle English as a form that could stand without a following noun. Our continues Old English ūre, the possessive form associated with the first-person plural pronoun. The same historical pattern appears in your and yours and in their and theirs. The final -s is therefore a possessive-form marker, not a plural ending or a contraction.
