adjective

より青白あおじろい

解説 Definition

paler は pale(青白い、淡い)の比較級で、「より青白い」「より色が薄い」という意味です。顔色や光、色合いなどを比べるときに使われます。

Paler is the comparative form of pale. It means having less color, appearing more whitish or faint, or looking more lacking in healthy facial color than someone or something else or than at an earlier time.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

原級 pale「青白い・淡い」の黙字 e を残したまま比較級の -r を付けて paler となり、発音は /ˈpeɪlər/ です。paler than ...「…より薄い」、look paler「以前より青白く見える」が典型。顔色だけでなく、色・光・月などの薄さを二者間または変化の前後で比べる語です。

Begin with pale, meaning light in color or lacking healthy color in the face. Because pale already ends in silent e, form the comparative by adding only -r: paler, pronounced /ˈpeɪlər/. Use paler than when making an explicit comparison, as in “This blue is paler than the sample.” It can also describe change without naming the comparison directly: a face looks paler after a trip, or the moon grows paler at dawn. The word compares degree; pale itself merely describes the quality.

例文

Her face looked paler after the long trip.

長旅のあと、彼女の顔は前より青白く見えました。

This blue is paler than the color on the sample card.

この青は見本カードの色より薄いです。

As the morning came, the moon grew paler in the sky.

朝が近づくにつれて、空の月はだんだん淡くなりました。

paler の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語「pallēre(青白くなる)」に由来し、古フランス語経由でpaleとなりました。「-er」は比較級を作る接尾辞です。同一語源のpallor(青ざめ)も血の気が引く様を表し、「血色が薄れて白っぽい」という感覚がしっくりきます。

Paler is formed from pale plus the comparative suffix -er; in spelling, a word already ending in e takes only an additional r. Pale came into English through Old French from Latin pallidus, “pale,” related to the Latin verb pallēre, “to be pale.” The same historical idea of reduced color appears in pallor. In modern English, paler compares faces, colors, light, and other things that appear less vivid.
