古フランス語 palefrei を経て入り、さらに中世ラテン語 paraveredus にさかのぼります。para-「脇の」＋ veredus「馬」で、もとは脇に控える予備馬のことでした。そこから楽に乗る上品な乗用馬を指すようになり、同系語に仏語 palefroi があります。
