baton はリレー競走で走者が受け渡す棒です。レースが一人で完結しないことから、責任や任務を次の人へ引き継ぐ比喩として広まりました。現在では元の場面を知らなくても、同じ発想で比喩的に理解できます。この連想が今も残ります。
