"Fringe" came through Old French from Latin "fimbria," meaning a border, fiber, or hanging thread at an edge. The original image was the loose threads or decorative ends along the edge of cloth. From that, English developed both the literal sense of an edging and the wider sense of something at the outer edge or margin.
