statute は古フランス語を経て、ラテン語 statuere「立てる・定める」由来の statutum から来ています。語幹 stat-「立つ」が核で、status や statue も同根なので、「社会に立てて固定した決まり」が法令だと見える語です。
Statute came through Old French from Latin statutum, the past participle of statuere, meaning to set up, establish, or decide. Its root is stat-, meaning to stand or set in place.
