政府が公式に制定した法律や規則で、社会の秩序を維持し個人や企業の行動を統制するものです。違反した場合の罰則や手続きも具体的に定められており、行政や司法が条文に従って運用します。市民はこの法令によって基本的な権利や義務が規定されることを理解しておく必要があります。
A statute is a written law that has been officially made by a government. It is a formal legal word used in law, government, and official documents. A statute is usually different from a general rule or custom because it has legal authority.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
statute は「議会などが文章として制定した law」と覚える。日常語の law よりかなり硬く、ニュース会話より契約書・判例・行政文書で出やすい。constitution は国の根本法、regulation は運用の細則、statute はその間で「正式に可決された個別の法律」に近い。statutory（法令上の）もセットで覚えると定着しやすい。under the statute, a federal statute, statute of limitations のように、条文ベースで権利義務を論じる場面の語として押さえる。
