by-law の語源・成り立ち Etymology
中英語 bilawe にさかのぼり、古ノルド語系の bȳlǫg に由来するとされる。bȳr は「町・村」、lǫg は「法」で、もとは地域共同体の規則を表した。
By-law goes back to Middle English bilawe. It is thought to come from Old Norse bȳlǫg, from bȳr meaning "town" or "village" and lǫg meaning "laws." The word originally referred to the rules of a local community.
