seaweed は古英語系の sea「海」+ weed「草・雑草」から成る語です。weed はもともと広く草本植物を指し、weedy や seaman も近い仲間です。つまり海藻は、海の中に生える草として理解され、陸の植物になぞらえて名づけられたと見えてきます。
