payload は pay と load の複合語で、pay は古フランス語経由でラテン語 pacare「清算する」、load は古英語 lād「運ぶもの」に由来します。原義は「運賃を生む荷」で、payment や unload を思い浮かべると、そこから航空機やロケットの「役に立つ積み荷＝有効荷重」へ広がったことが見えてきます。
