鉛筆とは、木の軸の中に黒い芯が入った筆記具で、先端を削って文字を書くのに使われます。学校や日常生活で広く使われています。
A pencil is a tool used for writing or drawing, usually made of wood with a thin piece of graphite inside. People often use it at school, in offices, or for sketching because the marks can usually be erased.

pencil は古フランス語 pincel を経て、ラテン語 penicillus「小さな尾・小筆」に由来し、-illus は縮小辞です。penicillium も同根で、もとは毛の束のような「小筆」を指した語が、細く先のとがった筆記具へ移ったと考えると鉛筆の名の由来が見えてきます。
Pencil came into English through Old French pincel from Latin penicillus, meaning "little tail" or "small brush," with a diminutive ending. The word first referred to a small fine brush. Later, it shifted to a thin pointed writing tool, which led to the modern meaning. Penicillium shares the same Latin root because it was named for its brush-like shape.
