proboscisはギリシャ語proboskisに由来し、pro-「前へ」+ boskein「食べる」で、原義は「前に突き出た食べる器官」。象の鼻や昆虫の口吻を指すのは、食べるための管が前へ伸びた姿そのものだからだ。proboscideanやproboscidateも同根だ。
