proteolysis は proteo-（protein 由来）+ -lysis（ギリシャ語で「分解」）から成る語です。protein は protos「第一の」にさかのぼり、「タンパク質をほどいて壊す」感覚で、analysis や hydrolysis の -lysis は“分解”を表します。
Proteolysis was formed in scientific English from proteo-, referring to protein, and -lysis, a Greek element meaning "loosening" or "breaking apart." Protein ultimately comes from Greek prōtos, meaning "first," because it was seen as a primary substance. So the word came to mean the breaking down of protein, like other scientific terms with -lysis such as hydrolysis and analysis.
