rafting の語源・成り立ち Etymology
中英語rafte（中蘭・古ノル語「梁」由来）が語源で、丸太を縛った浮き構造を指します。動詞raftに接尾辞-ingが結びつき、「筏での川下り活動」を表す名詞になりました。同じ語根のrafter（垂木）も「建材の丸太」を意味し、木材を組み立てるイメージが共通しています。
Rafting consists of raft and the suffix -ing. Raft entered English from a Germanic source and originally referred to timbers or logs fastened together to form a floating platform; related forms in northern European languages also denoted beams or assembled timber. English later developed the verb raft for traveling or transporting something by raft. The -ing form consequently came to name the activity, especially recreational travel through river rapids in an inflatable raft.
