A raster is a type of digital image made from a grid of tiny dots called pixels. It is commonly used in computer graphics, photography, and printing. Raster images can lose quality if they are enlarged too much.

画像の種類として覚えるなら、vector と対で押さえるのが最短です。raster は画面を細かいマス目に区切り、その1マスごとに色を置いて絵を作る方式。だから写真、スクリーンショット、塗りの多い画像に強く、逆に拡大すると輪郭がギザつきやすい。PNG や JPEG は基本こちら。動詞 rasterize は「ベクターをピクセル画像化する」。pixel・grid・resolution と一緒に覚えると、点の集合としての画像という感覚が固まります。

raster の語源・成り立ち Etymology
rasterはドイツ語Raster「格子・走査枠」からで、さらにラテン語rastrum「熊手」、動詞radere「こする・削る」に連なります。語幹ras-には「表面を筋状になぞる」感覚があり、razorやeraseも同根なので、画面を線でかき取るように走査して像を作る語だと見えてきます。
Raster came into English from German Raster, meaning a grid or screening pattern. It is related further back to Latin rastrum, "rake," and radere, "to scrape" or "scratch," which also gave English words like erase and razor. The sense developed from scratched or lined patterns to the grid of lines used to scan or build an image.
