re-（再び、徹底的に）+ search（探す）が語源。searchは古フランス語 cerchier、さらにラテン語 circare（巡り歩く）に遡り、circus（円）と同根。「何度も繰り返し隅々まで探し回る」が原義で、体系的な調査・研究の意味になった。
Researching is formed from the verb research plus -ing. Research came into English through French recherche, associated with rechercher, “to seek out or search closely.” Its second element is related to search, which developed through Old French cerchier and ultimately Latin circare, “to go around.” The modern word does not simply mean searching again; it commonly describes careful, systematic investigation using sources, observations, or data.
