使い方 Usage
使い分け Common distinctions
- 単に身を守ったり不満を述べたりするのではなく、受けた害に対して相手に害や不利益を返すことを表します。 Retaliate describes returning harm or imposing a penalty in response to an offense, rather than simply protecting oneself or expressing dissatisfaction.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
「先に攻撃され、その後にやり返す」場面で覚えましょう。retaliate の語末は無声音 /t/ なので、付け加える -s は /s/ と発音し、末尾は /ts/ になります。
Picture an attack followed by a harmful response: returning harm for harm. Retaliate ends in voiceless /t/, so the added -s is pronounced /s/, producing a final /ts/ sequence.
例文
When attacked, the animal retaliates with sharp claws.
攻撃されると、その動物は鋭い爪で反撃します。

retaliates の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語retaliare(同等のもので返す)が語源。re-(返して)+ talis(同様の)に分解できる。「やられたのと同じことを返す」が原義で、報復・仕返しの意味に。関連語:retaliation(報復)、talisman(同根ではないが混同されやすい)。
Retaliate entered English through later Latin retaliāre, meaning to repay in kind. The formation is associated with re-, conveying return or back, and Latin tālis, meaning “such” or “of such a kind.” Its underlying idea is therefore giving back treatment of a similar kind, which developed into the modern sense of taking revenge or responding to an injury. Retaliates is created regularly from retaliate by adding the third-person singular present ending -s.
