覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
通常は Semitic と大文字で書き、Semite に「〜に関する」を表す -ic が付いた形です。Arabic is a Semitic language のように、特にヘブライ語・アラビア語などの「セム語派」に結び付けて覚えましょう。言語学では Semitic languages、Semitic grammar が典型表現です。
Capitalize Semitic because it is the established name of a language branch and a historical cultural classification. Break it into Semite plus the adjective-forming suffix -ic, meaning “related to.” Anchor it in the sentence Arabic is a Semitic language, then add Hebrew and Aramaic as other examples. Common academic combinations include Semitic languages, Semitic grammar, and Semitic linguistics. In modern precise usage, the term is especially useful for classifying languages; avoid treating the many peoples who speak them as one uniform cultural group.

semitic の語源・成り立ち Etymology
Semitic は Semite に形容詞語尾 -ic が付いた語で、Semite はドイツ語 Semit を経て、旧約聖書の人名 Shem(セム)にさかのぼります。もとは「セムの子孫の」という発想から、そこからセム語派・その民族を指す語になりました。関連語に Semite、anti-Semitic があります。
Semitic was formed from Semite with the adjective suffix -ic. Semite entered English through European scholarly usage, including German Semit, and ultimately refers to Shem, a name in the Hebrew Bible. Scholars adopted the term in the late eighteenth century for a group of related languages traditionally associated with peoples considered descendants of Shem. Modern linguistics uses Semitic for a recognized branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family.
