Memory Tip
The easiest memory tip is that English also uses `shogi` for the Japanese game. Do not mix it with `chess`, because it names a specific game, not a general board game. Remember the set: `go`, `chess`, and `shogi` are three different games.

Etymology
Shogi was borrowed directly from Japanese 将棋. The first part means something like "general" or "commander," and the second refers to board-game pieces, so the name originally meant a game of military-style pieces. English kept the Japanese form to refer specifically to the traditional Japanese game, much as it does with xiangqi.
