Chess is a board game for two players in which each side moves different pieces by fixed rules. The aim is to trap the other player's king so it cannot escape. It is often associated with strategy, planning, and careful thinking.

英語 chess は古フランス語 esches を経て入り、その系統はアラビア語・ペルシャ語をさかのぼり、要の語は shah「王」です。王を追いつめる掛け声が盤上遊戯名へ広がったので、「王を詰める遊び」という芯が見えます。関連語は check、checkmate。
Chess came into English through Old French esches, from a line of words going back through Arabic to Persian shah, meaning "king." The name grew out of the call used when the king was under attack in the game. From that, the word became the name of the whole board game. Related English words include check and checkmate.
