解説 Definition
サッカーという意味です。主に足でボールを扱い、相手のゴールに入れるスポーツを指します。日本語の「サッカー」と同じ意味ですが、イギリス英語では football と呼ばれることが多いです。

「association football」の略称 assoc. に接尾辞 -er を付けた俗語が変化したもの。19世紀オックスフォード大学の学生スラングで語尾を -er に変える習慣（rugby→rugger等）から生まれた。関連語: footballer, rugby。
Soccer developed in late nineteenth-century British university slang from association football. Association was abbreviated as assoc., and the playful ending -er was added, following a slang pattern also seen in rugger for rugby. The resulting form became soccer. Although it originated in Britain, its modern regional distribution differs: football is now the usual British term for the sport, while soccer remains common in countries where football may name another game, especially the United States and Canada.
