イングランド中部の町 Rugby に由来する固有名詞。1823年にラグビー校（Rugby School）の生徒がフットボール中にボールを抱えて走ったのが起源とされる。地名 Rugby は古英語 Hroca（人名）+ byrig（砦）で「フロカの砦」が原義。
The sport was named after Rugby School in the English town of Rugby, where a form of football involving carrying the ball developed during the nineteenth century.
