ラグビー

解説 Definition

rugby は、ラグビーという球技の意味です。日本語の「ラグビー」と同じで、楕円形のボールを使うチームスポーツを指します。

Rugby is a team sport played with an oval ball that players may carry, pass, or kick while trying to score. The name covers related forms of the game, especially rugby union and rugby league.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

rugby は日本語の「ラグビー」と同じ球技名で、楕円形のボール、タックル、トライを典型場面として結び付けます。play rugby のように競技名には通常冠詞を付けず、個々の試合なら a rugby match や a rugby game とします。語名はイングランドの Rugby School に由来します。

Treat rugby as the same sport named by the Japanese loanword ラグビー, and anchor it to three clear images: an oval ball, tackling, and scoring a try. In English, use no article when naming the sport generally: He plays rugby. Add rugby before another noun in combinations such as rugby team, rugby match, and rugby player. The sport takes its name from Rugby School in England, so the capitalized place name Rugby and the usually lowercase sport name rugby share the same spelling.

例文

rugby の語源・成り立ち Etymology

イングランド中部の町 Rugby に由来する固有名詞。1823年にラグビー校(Rugby School)の生徒がフットボール中にボールを抱えて走ったのが起源とされる。地名 Rugby は古英語 Hroca(人名)+ byrig(砦)で「フロカの砦」が原義。

The sport was named after Rugby School in the English town of Rugby, where a form of football involving carrying the ball developed during the nineteenth century. The familiar story credits pupil William Webb Ellis with running while holding the ball in 1823, though the details are not securely documented. The town name itself is much older and is commonly explained as an Old English personal name combined with a word for a fortified place.
