解説 Definition

sons は son「息子」の複数形で、「息子たち」を表します。親から見た関係を指し、息子が成人していても使えます。

Sons are two or more male children considered in relation to their parent or parents. The word is the plural form of son and is commonly used when describing a family or family relationships.

使い方 Usage

  • two sons は「2人の息子」、her sons や their sons は「彼女の/彼らの息子たち」を表します。 Two sons gives the number of sons. Her sons and their sons show whose sons they are.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

son に複数形の -s を付けて sons。語末の n が有声音なので -s は /z/ と発音します。suns「太陽の複数形」とは同音なので綴りに注意しましょう。

Add the plural ending -s to son. After the voiced sound /n/, this ending is pronounced /z/. Sons and suns sound the same, so remember their different spellings and meanings.

sons の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 sunu(息子)の複数形 sons。ゲルマン祖語 *sunuz、印欧祖語 *suHnús(産む)に遡る。サンスクリット語 sūnu も同根で、インド・ヨーロッパ語族に広く共通する基本語彙。関連語: grandson(孫息子)、sonship。「生まれた者」が原義。

Sons is the plural of son, from Old English sunu. The noun belongs to an ancient Germanic word family reconstructed as Proto-Germanic *sunuz and is related to similarly old words for “son” in other Indo-European languages, including Sanskrit sūnú-. Modern English forms the plural regularly by adding -s to the singular son.
