soundproof は sound「音」+ proof「通さない」で、sound はラテン語 sonus、proof はラテン語 probare「試す」に由来する。sonic や approve と同系で、proof がもと「試して耐える」だと知ると、「防音」は“音に耐える作り”だと腑に落ちる。
