解説 Definition
子を産む、または物事を引き起こすこと。古風な表現で因果関係を示す際にも使う。
To beget means to cause something to happen or to produce a result. It is often used in formal or literary English, especially for one thing leading to another. In older usage, it can also mean to father a child.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
beget はまず get を核に見て、「何かを手にして終わる」でなく「何かを生み出して次へつなぐ」語だと押さえると覚えやすいです。日常会話の cause よりかなり文語的で、A begets B の形で「AがBを生む」という因果の連鎖を表すのが典型。children なら文字通り「子をもうける」、trouble / violence / conflict なら「問題・暴力・対立を招く」。結果をさらに生む、連鎖の出発点になる語だとまとめて記憶すると定着します。
Notice the `get` inside `beget`, but do not think about receiving something. Think about producing something that leads to the next thing: `A begets B`. It often appears in chains like `violence begets violence`, so it feels more formal than simple `cause`.

古英語 begietan に由来し、接頭辞 be-「…に及ぶ」+ get「得る」から成る語です。もとは「手に入れる・獲得する」でしたが、中英語で「子をもうける」の意が強まり、「命を得させる」感覚で今の意味になりました。関連語は get、forget です。
Beget comes from Old English begietan, formed from be- and get. It first had a broad sense of "gain" or "obtain." Later, the meaning narrowed to having a child, with the sense of causing life to be brought into being; it is related to get.
