spawn は英仏語を経て、古フランス語 espandre、さらにラテン語 expandere「広げる・まき散らす」に由来します。魚卵を水中にぱっと散らす動きが原像なので、「産卵する」から「次々に生み出す」へ意味が広がった流れが見えます。関連語は expand, expanse。
