A spectrograph is a scientific instrument that separates light into different colors or wavelengths and records them. It is used in physics, chemistry, and astronomy to study the properties of materials or stars.

spectrum を知っていれば覚えやすい語。spectro- は「スペクトル・光の見え方」、-graph は「書く・記録する」で、合わせて「光をスペクトルとして記録する装置」。photo/telegraph の graph と同じ仲間だと見ると定着しやすい。天文や分析で『光を分けて、線として残す機械』を思い浮かべるとよい。似た語の spectrometer は「測る」側に重点、spectrograph は記録画像まで残す感じ。
If you know `spectrum`, the first part is already familiar. The ending `-graph` means something that writes or records, as in `photograph`. So `spectrograph` is easy to store as a device that records light as a spectrum.
