A stegosaurus was a large plant-eating dinosaur with large plates along its back and spikes on its tail. People usually use this word when talking about dinosaurs, natural history, or prehistoric life. It names a specific type of dinosaur, not dinosaurs in general.

stegosaurus の語源・成り立ち Etymology
stegosaurus はギリシャ語 stegos「屋根・覆い」と sauros「トカゲ」から成る。Tyrannosaurus などの -saurus と同根で、背中の板が屋根瓦のように並ぶ姿から「屋根を持つトカゲ」という名が付いた。
Stegosaurus comes from Greek stegos, meaning "roof" or "covering," and sauros, meaning "lizard." The second part appears in many dinosaur names, such as Tyrannosaurus. The name was chosen because its back plates looked like a roof or covering laid along the body.
