解説 Definition
tyrannosaurus は、大型の肉食恐竜ティラノサウルスを指す語です。日本語の「ティラノサウルス」と同じですが、英語では学名や展示説明などで Tyrannosaurus と大文字で書かれることもあります。
A very large genus of meat-eating dinosaur that lived late in the Cretaceous Period and had powerful jaws, sharp teeth, strong hind legs, and very short forelimbs. The best-known species is Tyrannosaurus rex.

Tyrannosaurus is a modern scientific name created from Greek tyrannos, “absolute ruler” or “tyrant,” and sauros, “lizard.” It therefore means “tyrant lizard.” The genus was formally named in the early twentieth century, and its best-known species, Tyrannosaurus rex, adds Latin rex, “king.” Although dinosaurs are not literally lizards, the Greek element -saurus became conventional in the scientific names of many prehistoric reptiles and dinosaurs.
