dinosaur はギリシャ語 deinos「恐ろしい・驚くべき」と sauros「トカゲ」の合成語で、19世紀に作られました。直訳すると「恐るべきトカゲ」で、sauros は saurian や brontosaurus にも見られます。
Dinosaur was created in the 19th century from Greek deinos, meaning "terrible" or "wonderful," and sauros, meaning "lizard." The name was made to suggest a fearsome or astonishing reptile-like creature. The second part appears in other scientific names such as brontosaurus and in the word saurian.
