steroid の語源・成り立ち Etymology
steroidは1930年代に作られた科学語で、sterolに-oid「〜のような」を添えた形です。sterolはcholesterolにさかのぼり、その一部はギリシャ語stereos「固い」に由来するため、「固い骨格をもつ化学物質らしいもの」という名づけです。関連語はsterol、cholesterol。
Steroid was created as a scientific term in the twentieth century from sterol plus the suffix -oid, meaning “resembling” or “having the form of.” Sterol was itself formed from cholesterol and the chemical suffix -ol. The ster- element ultimately relates to Greek stereos, “solid.” The name came to designate compounds sharing a characteristic multi-ring molecular framework, rather than only one particular hormone or medicine.
