stressfulはstressと-fulで成り、stressはラテン語stringere「きつく締める」に由来し、-fulは「満ちた」を表します。strictやconstrainも同根で、stressfulが『出来事が多い』より『心身が締めつけられる状態』を指すと見えると意味が深まります。
"Stressful" combines stress with the suffix -ful, meaning "full of." Stress ultimately goes back to Latin stringere, meaning "to draw tight" or "bind tightly," a root also seen in strict and constrain. Because of that history, stressful came to describe situations that feel mentally or physically tightening or pressing.
