覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
supermarket は super-「通常を超えた・大型の」+ market「市場」という透明な合成語です。日本語では「スーパー」と省略しますが、英語で店を指すときは原則 supermarket と最後まで言います。go to the supermarket、buy food at the supermarket、a supermarket near my house のような日常のまとまりで覚えましょう。
Break supermarket into super- and market. A market is a place where goods are sold, and super- suggests something larger or more extensive than an ordinary market. Picture a large self-service store with aisles for milk, vegetables, bread, and household products. Learn it in everyday chunks: go to the supermarket, buy groceries at the supermarket, and a supermarket near my house. Japanese commonly shortens the loanword to スーパー, but English speakers normally use the full word supermarket; super by itself usually has other meanings and is not the standard name for this kind of store.
例文
I buy milk at the supermarket.

We went to the supermarket after school.
私たちは放課後にスーパーマーケットへ行きました。

supermarket の語源・成り立ち Etymology
英語 super-(超える、上の)+ market(市場)の合成語。superはラテン語 super(上に)から。1930年代アメリカで従来の市場を「超える」大型店として命名された。関連語: supernatural, marketplace。
Supermarket is a compound of super- and market. Super- comes ultimately from Latin super, “above, over, or beyond,” while market entered English through forms ultimately related to Latin mercātus, “trade or marketplace.” The modern retail term became established in American English during the early twentieth century, especially in the 1930s, for large self-service food stores offering a wider range of goods than many traditional shops. Its structure suggests a market enlarged in scale and scope.
