解説 Definition
A tautology is an unnecessary repetition of the same meaning in different words. This sense is used when criticizing redundant wording in speech or writing.
Memory Tip
Connect tauto- with "the same" and -logy with "saying": a tautology says the same thing again. Editing and wording contexts point to this rhetorical sense.
例文
The editor removed the tautology from the opening paragraph.
Calling it a "necessary requirement" may be criticized as a tautology.

Definition
In formal logic, a tautology is a proposition or formula that is true under every assignment of truth values because of its logical form.
Memory Tip
In a logic context, tautology means "always true by form." Words such as truth table, formula, and proposition signal this technical sense.
例文
In classical logic, "P or not P" is a tautology.
The truth table shows that the formula is a tautology.
Students were asked to determine whether the proposition was a tautology.
