動詞 thrill（ぞくぞくさせる）に行為者接尾辞 -er が付いた語。thrill は古英語 þyrlian（突き刺す、貫く）に由来し、þyrel（穴）と同根。関連語に nostril（鼻孔＝nose + thirl）がある。体を「突き刺す」ような興奮が転じてスリル満点の作品を指すようになった。
Thriller was formed in English from the verb thrill plus the noun-forming suffix -er, originally referring to a person or thing that causes a thrill and later especially to an exciting work of fiction or drama. Thrill ultimately developed from Old English þyrlian, “to pierce” or “make a hole.” The physical idea of being pierced shifted figuratively toward a sudden penetrating sensation and then toward intense excitement or suspense.
