excite はラテン語 excitare に由来し、ex-「外へ」+ citare「呼び起こす・動かす」から成る。incite や citation も同根で、原義は「内にあるものを外へ呼び出す」。そこから感情や関心を強く揺り動かす意味になった。
Excite comes from Latin excitare, built from ex- meaning "out" and citare meaning "to call up" or "set in motion." Its original sense was to bring something out or stir it up. From there, it came to mean strongly moving a person's feelings or interest; incite and citation share the same root.
