ギリシャ語 tropaion「敗走のしるし」がラテン語 trophaeum、古フランス語 trophée を経て英語になりました。語根 trop- は「向きを変える」で、trope も同根です。敵を“向き直らせ逃がす”勝利の記念物だったことから、今のトロフィーの意味になりました。
