trope の語源・成り立ち Etymology
trope はギリシャ語 tropos「向き・転回」が、ラテン語 tropus、フランス語を経て入った語です。語根は「向きを変える」で、言葉の意味をひねって使うことから比喩や定番表現を指します。tropism や tropical も同じ「turn」の感覚を残します。
From Greek tropos, meaning "a turn" or "direction," through Latin tropus and then French before entering English. The basic idea is turning or changing direction. It came to describe a turn in language, where words are bent from their usual meaning into a figure of speech or a familiar pattern.
