A theme is the main subject, message, or central idea in something. It is often used when talking about books, movies, art, talks, or events. It can also mean a special style that gives something a clear overall feeling.

theme は日本語の「テーマ」と形も意味もかなり近いので、まず一致で覚えやすい語です。ただし感覚は単なる話題より深く、「全体を通して繰り返し現れる中心の考え」。story の theme、the main theme、theme song などの形で触れると定着しやすいです。topic がその場の話題、subject がより広い対象なのに対し、theme は作品・議論・企画を貫く主題だと押さえると使い分けやすくなります。
Theme is close to the word used in many languages, so use that as your first memory hook. Then make it stronger by linking it to the main idea that runs through a story, talk, or project. Compare it with topic: a topic is what you talk about, but a theme is the central idea underneath.

theme はギリシャ語 thema「置かれたもの・主題」に由来し、さらに tithenai「置く」がその元です。話や作品の中心に「据えられたもの」という発想なので、「主題・テーマ」の意味になります。関連語は thesis、hypothesis です。
Theme comes from Greek thema, meaning "something set down" or "something placed," from tithenai, "to place." The idea was of something put forward as the main subject. From that, English developed the sense of the central subject of a speech, text, or work; related words include thesis and hypothesis.
